Writing your first CV
The steps to take when writing your CV are to:
- Decide what job role you are looking for.
- Research the skills needed and compare job adverts.
- Make a list of your key skills and match them to the job you’d like.
When you know they type of job you want to apply for:
- Make sure you have all your education, training or employment details to hand.
- Layout your CV sections for example: Name, Contact details, Personal profile, Achievement, Education, Training and Employment (if you already have work experience).
Now that you have a basic layout:
- Write details in snappy sentences and try to use bullet points where you can.
- Refer to the list of key skills you have that match the job advert.

Finally, make sure you spell check and read through the document. It’s a good idea to let a friend or member of your family take a look for some honest advice too.
